Vee Speers Poster - Untitled #3

One of Vee Speers' first photo series was "The Birthday Party," a series depicting children in various costumes for a birthday celebration. The series was also among the first exhibitions to take place at Fotografiska.

Vee Speers' inspiration for the series came from one of her daughter's actual 10th birthday parties with a dress-up theme. After the party, Vee Speers began studying historical costumes that she felt matched the personalities of the children she would photograph. The result is monochromatic images where superheroes and childish wonder are replaced by a mature and concrete personality in the pictures.

Many of the images have serious themes where children are dressed as soldiers and nurses, while others aim for the bizarre. An example of this is the image of a girl dressed in a black suit with wings.
