Naima Green: Pur·suit Card Deck
Naima Green: Pur·suit Card Deck
Drawing on her photographic practice of recording imagery of queer womxn, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people, artist Naima Green's Pur-suit Deck of cards (2019) pays homage to, and expands on Catherine Opie's Dyke Deck (1995) which was a project to render visible, and non-threatening, individuals of the queer community. Green's characteristic sense of a relaxed intimacy plays through these staged images of friends and volunteers - shown in groups, couples, and as individuals - radiating warmth, connection, and a quiet assertion of presence and endurance. Card games bring people together, pass the time in solitude, promote insight, divination, and tell many a queer tale. You don't need to be LGBTQ+ to enjoy this unique deck which - though every card is a face card - can be used to play conventional suit games, but is available to suggest new tricks and styles, however you like. Did someone say shut up and deal?
