Infamous (Malcom X – Car Air Freshener) Poster

This photo of a car air freshener, with an image of Malcolm X, is taken from the exhibition Infamous, where the American artist Andres Serrano (b. 1950) shows photographs of racial and racist souvenirs that the artist bought in 2019.

Since the mid-1980s, charged subjects have been central to Serrano's bold color photographs. His name has been synonymous with controversy ever since the blasphemous use of religious iconography early in his career. Serrano is an intrepid image maker who photographs people, places and objects that most of us would rather turn our backs on – whether out of shame, disgust or offense. His subjects are clear embodiments of themes – death, sex, religion, torture and white-power culture – that stir personal and societal beliefs.
